I have been a maker/creative all my life and I’ve worked full time in the creative industry since 2011 both online and in the handmade and vintage show market.
In that time I’ve been blessed to meet many creative entrepreneurs and develop lifelong friendships as well. What I’ve found is there is a common thread that runs true through every successful creative I’ve met......they are courageous. There is this innate sense of bravery and fearlessness in them and that is what propels both their craft and their business forward.
Now don’t get me wrong.....creatives experience fear just like everyone else....I dare say even more so than others......but the need to create and the desire to earn a living with their hands outweighs the obstacles that are presented through fear.
A few years ago, during a difficult time in my life and business, I found my own courage lacking. Due to a hand injury, what I had created and how i had made a living for so long simply was not doable anymore. I was scared and sad and angry.....all of the emotions y’all! There was a lot of confusion as to how I would move forward but I DID KNOW that going back to a 9-5 or working for someone else was not an option that worked for me.
So, with the encouragement of a few precious friends and loved ones, and a big leap of faith, I started experimenting with new mediums and was kind of all over the place for a while. This experimental time served me well in helping me get past that fear of trying something new. That time helped me to understand that WHAT I CREATE does not define WHO I AM.....that I am an intelligent, capable woman.....and that you CAN teach an old dog new tricks!
Joshua 1:9 says “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
I once painted that verse on a canvas and it still hangs in our bathroom now....but it wasn’t until recently that I realized that the first part of that verse is usually left out when quoted....”Have I not COMMANDED you?” COMMANDED?!
God doesn’t simply suggest that we be strong and courageous. That we do no fear or get discouraged.......He commands it! He is saying “Trust me. I am with you. I got you girl!” and he commands that trust from us. When I figured out that part it made all my whining and insecurities about what I can or cannot do seem really petty and selfish and downright disobedient....and after much prayer and reflection I felt this calling to step out of my realm of comfort and begin teaching other women that they can do the same thing.
And that, my friends, is how the Fearless Creatives Workshops came to be!
You CAN learn new things. You can face the fear of trying something new.....the overwhelm, the uncertainty, the guilt, the unknown......We can face it because we serve a God that is bigger than all of that. The ultimate creative.....He made YOU creative as well and he fully expects you to embrace that and have faith in his good plans for you.
I’m simply here to be an encouraging step forward and a guide in your creative journey. And it’s truly an honor.
